Starting with the VT 317 in 1909, Gilera went on to produce the 500cc side valve motorcycles that would win many major international races of the 1920s. Continuing their success they produced the Gilera Rondine, a cross-racing bike which set a world record of 274.181 kph in 1937. In all, Gilera won 44 international Grand Prix titles before its initial exit from racing in 1957.

Today Gilera are still producing performance machines and the year 2000 marked the launch of the revolutionary DNA, a "naked" motorcycle with an automatic engine that pushes the scooter and motorcycle concepts even closer together - a forerunner of the machines that major Japanese manufacturers will launch years later.
